A perfumed, elegant and airy nose freely offers up its beautifully layered aromas of violet, dark currant, spice and an all but invisible application of oak. The refined and decidedly punchy light to barely middle weight flavors are borderline aggressively mineral-driven while exhibiting excellent length on the dusty and youthfully austere finale. This too could use better depth but it is undeniably classy.

The other new red is the 2023 Cáreo, which is a different story from the A Bruxa. It comes from a very old vineyard planted with Mencía, Palomino, Doña Blanca and a little Godello, an ancient, centenary 0.9-hectare plot, where the Mencía has thinner skins, and the tannins are also finer. This is from the same zone as the white Tormenta in San Juan de la Mata, technically a village wine from Arganza, one of the few places in Bierzo that has limestone soils. Part (80%) of the wine fermented in a troncoconic oak vat with 100% full clusters and the rest was destemmed and fermented in bins, then the wine matured in separate 300-liter barrels for 11 months, after which, it was blended and put in amphorae, where it rested for another four months. This has a very focused violet note, also peachy, with a fine texture, with the mouthfeel from the limestone soils. It comes in at 12.9% alcohol with a pH of 5.4. I cannot make up my mind if I prefer this or the new A Bruxa... In any case, these are two superb additions to the portfolio, completing the high end in a stunning vintage. Bravo!! 2,755 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2025.

Notes BeMyWine : Le Pouilly-Fuissé de la Maison Valette est un Chardonnay lumineux, issu d’un assemblage de plusieurs millésimes, cultivé sur les terroirs marno-calcaires de Fuissé. Élevé un an en fûts de chêne suivi d’un affinage en cuve inox, il allie finesse et profondeur. Au nez, il révèle des notes d’agrumes mûrs, de fruits secs et une subtile touche grillée, soutenues par une minéralité salivante. En bouche, l’ampleur et la rondeur s’équilibrent sur une belle fraîcheur, pour une finale longue et vibrante — un vin à partager avec de beaux poissons, crustacés ou volailles en sauce crémeuse.

Opening in the glass with notes of cherries, smoky berries, sweet soil tones and burning embers, the 2021 Morgon Côte du Py is medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with good concentration, powdery tannins and a penetrating, saline finish. Despite the challenges of the vintage, the Desvignes family has produced a very classy wine.

The nose and palate of the 2022 El Tamboril Tinto are really tight; it's a wine that needs more time (they reckon the 2016 is the one drinking well in 2024). It has a lot of energy and still has some creaminess and spiciness (from the élevage?). It has tons of fine tannins, giving it a powdery, dry texture. It fermented in concrete and oak, trying not to extract, fermenting with some juice without skins, a super infusion with even less extraction than the others as it has natural power. It matured in a 10,000-liter Stockinger oak foudre. 1,334 bottles and 30 magnums were filled in May 2024. This is the wine in the portfolio that needs time in bottle.
